Telling Stories, Writing Songs : An Album of Texas Songwriters is a must-read for anyone who is a songwriter, who wants to be a songwriter, or who enjoys listening to songs, especially songs written by Texas songwriters. In this volume, which is the culmination of several years of tape-recorded interviews in smoky bars, backstage parties, hotel rooms, and tour buses, Hudson gives the reader a personal glimpse into the creative and sometimes warped minds of many of the state's most prolific songwriters. With minimal editing, Hudson retains the conversational feel of interviews with Lyle Lovett, Tish Hinojosa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Guy Clark, Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Marcia Ball, Robert Earl Keen, and just about every other Texas songwriter you can imagine. These songwriters talk about not only their own songs, but the history and development of songwriting from a distinctly Texan perspective, making this book not only an enjoyable and informative read, but also a valuable historical document. Hudson is currently working on a new book which will focus on female songwriters; I can't wait to read that one as well!
